Legions


The Legions are relics of a bygone era, the early days of darkness, when humanity still believed it possible to contain and control the Rifts to the Dark Plane. Nations built powered armor, fully enclosed protective suits that allowed men to walk the grounds of the contaminated Zones unaffected. In short time, these walking tanks became the spearhead forces of the world's great military powers, deployed to contested border Zones in battle over control of the fantastic resources they contained.

As the so-called Zone Wars intensified, and the use of dark weaponry and dark technology became more commonplace, the rifts grew and multiplied. The stability of nations was threatened, and entire civilizations began to fracture. In many places the power armored forces, weapons bred purely for war, broke off into splinter groups, set up their own fiefdoms, or simply usurped control of weakened governments.

Thus were born the Legions. Gene-enhanced warriors encased in adamantine armor, carrying powerful weaponry, trained as the ultimate shock troops. They commanded such concentrated power that the weakened nation-states that remained were unable to control them. The Legions slipped the leash of their creators and pursued their own objectives through brutal application of force. Their motives varied: some Legions maintained loyalty what civilian leadership remained, acting as benevolent saviors amid a world of horrors. Other Legions wielded iron-fisted control of the populace while providing for their protection, a wall of feudal knights against a rising tide of darkness. Still others succumbed to the madness of the darkened world, or to their own bloodthirsty impulses, building twisted empires or sowing terror for terror's sake.

For better or for worse, the Legions remain the pinnacle of mankind's military achievements. How they choose to wield their power will shape the course of human civilization, or finally break its back, in the dark years ahead.

Conscripts


Every human faction, from the smallest settlements to the largest nation-states, is on a constant war footing, their very existence threatened both from within and without. The dangers are many: the unpredictable appearance of new rifts; marauding warbands of foraging Greenskins; Reaver raiding parties; or even the forces of another settlement come to lay claim to their land, their resources, or their very lives. In such times, conscripted forces are common - armed and equipped to a modest standard and trained to defend their homes.

All too often though, a desperate or uncaring faction will send their foot-slogging conscripts into the perilous Zones, where those without proper protection are at constant risk of madness, mutation, or worse. Sometimes the cause is just - striking at the heart of a raider encampment, or defending a desperately needed resource to keep their settlement afloat. In many cases, greed is the only motivator, expending the lives of common men and women to capture valuable territory from a neighboring power.

These conscripts are not alone though - depending on the wealth and resources of their homeland, they often come amply supported by armored vehicles, artillery, and aircraft of all types and degrees of sophistication. To send common infantry alone against the might of a Legion or the brutal tide of a Greenskin warband would be suicide, but in concert with support assets, the guns and bayonets of a conscripted force are more than a match for any enemy.
